Jude Bellingham\’s two goals powered England into the World Cup semi-finals with an extra-time victory over Norway.
England secured a 2-1 win in Miami\’s Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday, surviving a dramatic quarter-final under sweltering heat.
The match, played in extreme 108°F (42°C) conditions, saw Bellingham\’s 93rd-minute strike seal England\’s fate.
However, England\’s path to the semi-finals was far from smooth.
Manager Thomas Tuchel admitted his team \”made life very, very difficult\” despite celebrating their semi-final berth.
\”The result is fantastic,\” Tuchel said. \”But not happy with the performance… we were very lucky today.\”
England\’s first goal came from a controversial incident when Norway\’s goalkeeper Orjan Nyland\’s goal kick struck an overhead camera cable.
This should have led to a re-taken kick, but England capitalized on the chaos.
Morgan Rogers\’ long-range shot spilled by Nyland set up Bellingham\’s equalizer in first-half stoppage time.
Norway regained hope when Torbjorn Heggem scored in the 55th minute, only for VAR to rule it out due to an Erling Haaland shove on Elliot Anderson.
England, exhausted in the heat, retook the lead in the 93rd minute through Bellingham\’s rebound goal.
The clash was expected to feature Harry Kane versus Erling Haaland, but this showdown never fully materialized.
Haaland was substituted in extra time as Norway pushed futilely for an equalizer.
England also benefited from a missed chance when Alexander Sorloth ignored an open Haaland in the 44th minute.
Andreas Schjelderup gave Norway an early lead with a rasping shot in the 36th minute.
England\’s win sets up a semi-final clash with either Argentina or Switzerland on Wednesday.
Argentina, the defending champions, face Switzerland in Kansas City after overcoming Cape Verde and Egypt in tight knockout games.
Lionel Messi, now 39, remains Argentina\’s key player, though fatigue could be a concern.
Switzerland\’s Granit Xhaka, 33, expressed confidence in his team\’s ability to challenge Argentina.
\”Sometimes you need to do something new,\” Xhaka said. \”I\’m convinced my team is ready.\”
The Swiss will need to push their limits to upset the South American giants in their quest for glory.
