In a stunning reversal of expectations, former UFC double champion Conor McGregor suffered a swift defeat in his highly anticipated UFC comeback after a five-year absence. The 37-year-old Irish fighter was stopped after just 69 seconds by Max Holloway at UFC 329 in Las Vegas due to a devastating right knee injury.
A Rocky Opening Minutes
Referee Mike Beltran called an abrupt end to the welterweight contest early in the first round. McGregor collapsed to the mat three times within the opening minute after landing awkwardly during a roundhouse kick. The Irish star repeatedly grabbed at his right knee, signaling severe pain before officials intervened.
“What can I say? I had him weak in the knees I guess,” Holloway quipped post-fight. “So much hype. We’ve got to run it back one more time,” he added. “For it to end like this sucks.”
McGregor exited the octagon silently, leaving Holloway to voice concern about his opponent’s condition. “I could tell. His whole demeanor changed. He said, ‘Fight! Fight!’” Holloway recalled, noting McGregor’s visible distress.
A Historic Rematch Cut Short
The bout was billed as “the comeback of all comebacks in sports history,” marking a rematch of their 2013 featherweight clash where McGregor originally triumphed via unanimous decision. However, this fight marked McGregor’s first UFC appearance since his 2021 loss to Dustin Poioiuer, which ended his left leg in brutal fashion.
Before this setback, McGregor dominated the octagon, becoming the first UFC fighter to hold two titles simultaneously in 2016. His most recent UFC victory came in January 2020, stopping Donald Cerrone in just 40 seconds. Meanwhile, Paddy Pimblett submitted Benoit Saint Denis in 52 seconds during another lightweight bout.
Holloway, ever the sportsman, expressed hope McGregor’s injury was “not too crazy,” acknowledging the dramatic end to what many expected to be a career-defining return.
