Starmer Plans Bank Holiday for England\’s World Cup Triumph

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is reportedly exploring a national bank holiday if England clinches the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The proposed date for nationwide festivities is Friday, July 24, allowing time for the team to return home after the tournament final.

Starmer recently sidestepped confirming the plan during a press briefing. He hinted he doesn\’t want to \”jinx\” England’s chances and suggested the idea might resurface if the team reaches the World Cup final.

Semi-Final Matchup and Final Details

England will face defending champions Argentina in the semi-final, while France and Spain clash in the other last-four encounter. Should England advance to the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 19, Starmer is expected to travel to the U.S. to support the squad.

However, the prime minister’s schedule could become demanding if England reaches the final. He would need to return to London quickly after the match to deliver a farewell speech from Downing Street and recommend Andy Burnham as his successor to the King.

UK-Wide Celebration Uncertain

Meanwhile, questions remain about whether the proposed bank holiday would extend across the entire United Kingdom. Public holiday policies vary between England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

England last lifted the FIFA World Cup trophy in 1966 after a historic win over West Germany at Wembley Stadium. Another title would mark a momentous achievement for the nation.
