US Advances in World Cup with Bosnia Win

US men’s soccer team kept their World Cup hopes alive with a 2-0 win over Bosnia in the round of 32. This victory moved them into the round of 16. Folarin Balogun scored the first goal, and Tim Ream helped create the chance.

Balogun netted his third tournament goal after a smooth play involving Ream and Malik Tillman. He had several chances in the first half and stood out before getting sent off in the 64th minute after a tackle on Tarik Muharemović.

Even with 10 players for most of the second half, the US stayed in control. Tillman added a second goal in the 82nd minute. His free kick from outside the box slipped past Bosnia’s goalkeeper, Nikola Vasilj, despite a hand touch.

This win is only the second time the US has beaten a team in a World Cup knockout stage. Their last such win was against Mexico in 2002. They also reached the semi-finals in 1930 after topping their group.

The US will now play Belgium in the round of 16 in Seattle. They are trying to make a deep run on home soil.

This result ended the US’s 10-game losing streak against European teams at the World Cup. It was their first win over a European side since beating Portugal in 2002.

Bosnia and Herzegovina finished their campaign memorably. They reached the knockout stage for the first time, after drawing with Canada and beating Qatar in the group stage.
